Now I'm going to avoid anything about the new games as much as possible because internet hype probably ruined Gen 6 for me.

Meanwhile, Nintendo has done its own "what Pokemon type are you" quiz thus invalidating any argument that we should keep personality quizzes in Mystery Dungeon.

If you're curious, I'm a Normal-type.

A quicker way:

So I'm Psychic Normal. Great, I'm Giraffarig.

Alternatively, there are a couple of others with an image search, so I could be Double Fighting (so, pure Fighting), which could be good or shit, or I could be Ghost Fire. Fuck yes Chandelure!

Welp, sounds like Pokemon Go is live in Australia.

You know what you have to do, Koumei.

Well, Gen VII is around the corner, so who knows, it could still happen.

I'm apparently Golurk, which just makes me feel like this quiz was a very convoluted way to tell me I'm out of touch with pokemon.

Well that was quick. Here is my report on Pokemon Go.

It is a location reliant game and there is apparently nothing to do anywhere within sight of my location if not beyond.

It is a money reliant game and prices look high and ongoing.

I THINK if I spent one of my only 2 free starting incense items wild pokemon MIGHT turn up for a whole 30 minutes per item. But I don't know exactly how that would work, suspect it isn't real battles, and it's raining outside and the game gets annoyed when my roof interferes with my GPS, and without spending those items (and I suspect going out in the rain) there is seemingly literally NO free game content for the likes of me.

Oh cool, there's a new pokemon unveiled, Salandit, and it's a Poison/Fire one that looks like a dark grey salamander/crocodile thing. Now certainly that sounds like "I hope my opponent has no Ground moves ever. Like Earthquake." And aside from that, weakness to Psychic, Rock and Water. So there are problems there. On the other hand it Resists Fire, Grass (x2), Ice, Bug (x2), Steel, Fairy (x2), Poison and Fighting. And yeah, STAB supereffective hits against Grass, Ice, Steel, Bug, Fairy. But more importantly, perhaps, it has an Ability that could make it really useful: Corrosion - it can even poison/badly poison Steel and Poison types. And it gets Toxic as a move, so it could be an amazing counter for certain bulky Steel and Poison types (Aggron, Skarmory... I'm sure there's a bulky Poison type) that love to stall you out.

Indeed, a lot of the new pokemon have cool designs, and they seem to have played with a lot of new Type pairings, and the new abilities shown so far are mostly interesting with the potential to be useful.

Which means Inkay/Malamar (So... Illithids?), or Hoopa Unbound.

I don't know these newfangled Pocket monsters, but they seem cool.

JE: Malamar is a kind of gimmick pokemon. It's Dark/Psychic which is interesting (if crippled by Bug attacks like the ever-present U-Turn), and its only Ability that anyone ever takes is Contrary: it treats stat Boosts as Drops and vice versa. So what happens is it unleashes Superpower a bunch of times, hitting hard and also raising both Attack and Defence, then goes for shit like Knock-Off/Night Slash and Psycho Cut.

The problem is the base stats aren't very good so you absolutely need those Superpowers.

The other thing you could maybe do with it is using stuff like Swagger as a set up (enemy gets 2 Attack buffs and Confusion) or Flatter (enemy gets Special Attack buff and Confusion), and then following with either Foul Play (hits enemy with their own Attack power) or Topsy-Turvy (which reverses the enemy stat changes so you can change +2 Attack to -2 Attack).

The coolest thing about Malamar, aside from appearance, is that it evolves BY HOLDING THE DS UPSIDE-DOWN.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

I'll admit, while the non-standard Pokemon evolutions were a fucking pain at times (transferring Geodude inside of a GB emulator is possible, but I saved that effort to get a Charmander and Squirtle to join my Bulbasaur save file); they also helped to give the game some really unique quirks.

But, I also haven't played Pokemon in about.... 18 or so years; and haven't once felt an interest in doing so again. The game devolves into soul-crushing work, and unless I'm able to pit my team against humans it would feel like a wasted effort to build an optimized team (the NPCs have never counted as a challenge; except the first time I used Charmander to beat Brock X_x).

The fact that Pokemon players aren't really hyper-competitive would mean that even if I could duel other players; I'd be losing friends who aren't hyper-optimizers, or else facing intentional troll-teams like All-Snorlax parties.

Hahaha, they totally are. At least, on the Internet they are. There are Internet battling communities that strip the grinding and "breed ten thousand to get the perfect nature and IVs" out of the game, but also strip the actual fun out of the game, where you can form a team in your browser, check to make sure it adheres to the unofficial rules set out by Angela Merkel, then battle people with ranked ladders. In your browser without needing a DS.

Where you will see the same few pokemon appearing in almost every single team you fight.

Now I want a reality where world leaders are pokemon trainers and policy making and politics feature lots of broadcasted pokemon battles.

That's why you have random battles where you have to make do with what the luck gods grant you.

In related news, Pokemon Go is so popular that Nintendo paused the app distribution since their servers couldn't handle it anymore.

Due to my phone basically being in its death throes and in need of replacement, I don't have Go. Also I'm not really the social type so I wouldn't be the one doing the awesome Team Rocket plan.

But I'm still kind of interested. Do you battle them, raise and train them and pat them and talk to them, or is it really just "See pokemon -> Touch screen to catch pokemon -> Gotta catch em all!"?

More the latter. You wander around, catch pokemon by swiping on the screen to throw a ball at them (which is a bit more difficult than it sounds, the ball has to actually hit them), and then improve their Combat Points/evolve them by spending ingame currency (stardust and candies delineated by the individual pokemon, ie, charmander candies, rattata candies, etc) earned when you catch pokemon.

There are gyms where you can battle, but the battling isn't particularly similar to console game battles. Each pokemon has a basic attack it does when you tap on the opponent pokemon and a super move you can charge up by hitting the opponent with your basic and unleash by long pressing. Winning a battle increases the CP of the pokemon you used and gives you xp as a trainer.

So far as I can tell it's currently gen 1 only, but there's not a lot of "oh, you have to go find a burning building to catch a growlithe!" I've caught a growlithe at my college, and I assure you, there's no fire affinity there. Your trainer level influences what you can run into, but that's it.

It's fun, but it's not going to replace the console games. Also, there's no real need to socialize.

The socialising is specifically to steal people's pokemon.

Doesn't sound terribly interesting, though. I do like that the Westborough Baptist Church has become a Gym full of Fairy Type Pokemon and has basically been taken over, in the game at least, by gay people.
